When a Bell Tent is a Signature Belle Tent
When anyone mentions bell tents the immediate image in my mind is of a shabby, light coloured pointed tent with little in the way of waterproofing or comfort. Inside, its cramped with limited headroom and a central pole that suffers from the raucous attacks of holidaying kids.
This has prevented me from seeing them as little more than a cheap way of saying you offer glamping, while caring little for the guest experience.
But why is this? Why can’t we offer a bell tent experience that provides the best in glamping breaks.
Firstly, I think we need to stop calling them bell tents, its too old, too yesterday, too scouts on Brownsea island a million years ago. When Henry Sibley patented the first formal bell tent design back in 1858, its purpose was to protect the troops fighting in the Indian wars in north America while on campaign, not provide a high end holiday experience.
While the basic design and materials have changed little, the usage and need of the humble bell tent has moved on significantly.
The requirements now are for a tent that provides a reliable, waterproof, clean, mould free tent that can withstand the winds of global warming. A tent that justifies the high night rates being charged, a tent that creates Instagram able memories and repeat bookings.
